A mastery summary like this is the only thing saved from each session — see how we handle student data.

How it works

Tutors bring the teaching. Highlighter builds the practice engine around it — and a human reviews every course before a student ever sees it.

1

Tutors upload & price

A tutor uploads the lessons, worksheets, and videos they already teach from, and sets their own pricing for courses and live sessions.

2

We build the adaptive course

Highlighter converts that material into an adaptive course — then the tutor reviews and approves every lesson before it publishes. No exceptions.

3

Diagnostics find the gaps

Students take short diagnostics that pinpoint exactly which skills are solid and which need work — no busywork, no guessing.

4

Targeted practice + check-ins

The engine generates follow-ups aimed at each gap, and the tutor checks in live — by video, right on the platform — to keep learning human.

Built for tutors first

Highlighter is not a marketplace that replaces tutors with content. It is the engine behind the tutors families already know and trust.

  • ✓Bring your own students. Your families come with you. The relationship stays yours — Highlighter never markets other tutors to your students.
  • ✓Your material, your voice. Courses are built from what you upload, reviewed by you, and published under your name.
  • ✓Set your own prices. For courses and for live sessions — 1:1 check-ins, small groups, and full tutoring hours.
  • ✓Less prep, more teaching. The adaptive engine handles practice, grading, and follow-ups, so your time goes to the moments that matter.

The math families already do

Private tutoring, 2 hrs/weekAt the common rate of ~$100/hour — great teaching, but the practice stops when the hour ends.

What could your family save?

Drag the slider. Private tutoring is wonderful — and priced by the hour. Highlighter keeps your tutor in the loop for a flat monthly price.

At the common rate of $100/hour, that's what the month looks like — versus Highlighter at $129/mo, which includes daily adaptive practice plus live tutor check-ins.

Trust & Safety

Children learn here, so safety is not a settings page — it is how the whole product is built. Plain language, no fine-print games.

Parents own the account

A parent or guardian creates the family account first and gives verifiable consent before any child profile exists. Children under 13 never self-register — there is no child sign-up form, anywhere.

Sessions are ephemeral

We process each learning session, save only the mastery summary — which skills improved, which need work — and automatically delete the raw session data on a short retention window. Less data kept means less data at risk.

Never ads. Never training data.

Student data is never used for advertising, never sold, and never used to train AI models. Full stop. It exists to teach your child — nothing else.

Encrypted in transit and at rest

All data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.2+) and at rest (AES-256). Access inside Highlighter is role-based and logged, and families can request export or deletion of their child's data at any time.

Tiered tutor vetting

Every creator verifies their government ID before publishing anything. Tutors who meet students live 1:1 complete a full background check first. Course-only creators — who never meet students live — follow the model used by platforms like Udemy.

Everything stays on-platform

Messaging, scheduling, and video all happen inside Highlighter — never over personal email, text, or social media. Group office hours are recorded on-platform, and parents can join any session.

Built to the strictest standard that applies: COPPA CA SOPIPA / KOPIPA NY Ed Law 2-d FERPA-aligned practices Where laws differ, the strictest rule wins. Schools and districts can request our Data Privacy Agreement (DPA). If a breach ever affects your family's data, we commit to notifying affected families promptly and plainly.

Questions parents actually ask

Straight answers, in the same plain language we use everywhere else.

Your child's tutor uploads the material they teach from, and Highlighter turns it into a course — after the tutor personally reviews and approves it. Your child takes short diagnostics that find exactly which skills are solid and which have gaps. The engine then serves practice aimed at those gaps: miss a question, and it explains the idea a different way and checks again with a fresh question. When a gap needs a human, the tutor gets a nudge to check in live.

As little as teaching requires: first name, grade level, chosen subjects, answers to learning questions, and mastery progress. Each session is processed to produce a mastery summary — that summary is all we keep. The raw session data is automatically deleted on a short retention window.

No. Ever. Student data is never sold, never used for advertising, and never used to train AI models. There are no ads aimed at children on Highlighter, and no marketing profiles built from their learning. This is a promise we put in writing in our Privacy & Children's Data policy.

It's the standard COPPA — the federal children's privacy law — sets before a service may collect information from a child under 13. On Highlighter it works like this: you create the family account, you read and check plain-language consent statements, and we verify you're an adult account holder with a temporary $0 card authorization that is never charged. Children never sign themselves up.

Yes — any time, from your account settings. You can review what's stored, export it, correct it, or delete the profile entirely. Deleting the profile deletes the underlying data, and withdrawing your consent does the same. No support ticket, no waiting period, no dark patterns.

That's the plan. We're preparing vendor applications for Education Savings Account programs in Arizona, Florida, and Texas, so eligible families can pay through their state's ESA marketplace (such as ClassWallet) once approved. Until approval is final in a state, families pay out of pocket — we'll say so plainly rather than promise early.

Only what teaching requires: first name, grade, course progress, mastery summaries, and upcoming session context (like which lesson triggered a check-in). Tutors never see your payment details, your contact information beyond on-platform messaging, or anything about your other children unless you've connected them too.

A live video session on Highlighter — never on a tutor's personal accounts. Short 1:1 check-ins (about 25 minutes) focus on the exact gap the adaptive engine flagged; small groups work a shared skill together, and full hours are traditional 1:1 tutoring. Tutors offering 1:1 sessions with minors have completed a background check, group sessions are recorded on-platform, and you can join any session, any time.

Demo access For reviewers

Reviewing the prototype? Skip the sign-up forms and the card check entirely. Enter the demo code and you're in with full access to every flow — tutor dashboard, parent sign-up and progress view, booking, the review queue, and Test Flight. Everything stays simulated.

Children do not create accounts on Highlighter. A parent sets up the family account first — always.

What the latest check found

From Tuesday's short diagnostic — written for parents, not teachers.

Maya is solid on finding common denominators. The one gap: when a problem needs her to rename both fractions (not just one), she sometimes renames only the first. The practice engine is serving extra questions on exactly that this week — and Ms. Rivera has the detail for Thursday's check-in.

From Ms. Rivera — after Thursday's check-in

Your tutor's own words, from the on-platform session summary.

"Maya explained equivalent fractions back to me perfectly — she really owns that now. We worked the two-fraction renaming together with the number line, and she got the last three on her own. Next week we'll take on mixed numbers. She's doing genuinely well; the confidence is catching up to the skill."

Your teaching. Your business.

Highlighter is the engine; the students, the pricing, and the reputation are yours. Here's exactly how the money works — no fine print.

You set the price

Charge between $99 and $149 per student, per month — the band families can sustain. Live session rates (check-ins, groups, full hours) are entirely yours to set.

Simple revenue share

Highlighter keeps 20% of the gross student payment — calculated before card-processing fees — for the platform and the adaptive engine. You keep 80% of every dollar families pay, every month, for as long as they stay.

Small, honest fees

A one-time $49 tutor setup fee covers verification and onboarding — that's the only platform fee. Card processing (Stripe, ~2.9% + 30¢ per charge) comes off each payment before payout and is itemized below. Families pay exactly your price; nothing is added on top.

A worked example — 20 students at $129/mo

Your students pay20 students × $129/mo — your price, your roster. Bring your existing families; there's no marketplace competing for them.
$2,580/mo
Highlighter's share — 20% of grossCalculated on the full $129 before any processing fees. Covers the adaptive engine, hosting, video, and support.
− $516/mo
Card processing — Stripe ~2.9% + 30¢About $4.04 per $129 charge, taken off the charge before payout. That's the processor's fee, not ours.
− ~$81/mo
Paid out to youYour 80% share is $2,064 — card processing brings the actual payout to about $1,983. Plus whatever you earn from live sessions on top, at rates you set.
≈ $1,983/mo
Compare the family's side: the same teaching attention bought as private tutoring at ~$100/hr, 2 hrs a week, runs about $800/mo per family. On Highlighter it's $129 — which is why rosters fill and stay.

Where one $129 payment goes

Every charge, split in the open — the same numbers families see when they sign up.

To you, the tutor≈ $99.16

To card processing (Stripe, ~2.9% + 30¢)≈ $4.04

Why tutors stay

The practice, grading, and follow-up grind is automated. Your hours go to teaching — and your students' progress data proves your value to every family, every week.

  • ✓Your students stay yours. We never market other tutors to your families.
  • ✓Your material stays yours. Courses are built from your uploads and published under your name; your content is never used to train AI models.
  • ✓Verification that protects you too. ID verification for every creator and background checks for live 1:1 keep the platform — and your reputation — clean.
